The headlines have been the same for quite some time now: there is an obesity crisis in this country and an unprecedented number of teens are seriously overweight to the point some experts are calling teen obesity a pandemic. The future looks grim for these overweight teens: odds are they are going to become overweight adults who can expect to suffer from obesity related disease including diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, social stigma and eventually a life cut short because of obesity.

We know that children who are overweight become overweight teens and eventually overweight adults. To stop this cycle adults have been treated with bariatric surgery for several decades. It is only since this pandemic hit the teen population that weight loss surgery has been considered a viable intervention for teens suffering from morbid obesity.
